Origin Energy has today submitted a request to the Australian Energy Market Operator to bring forward the closure of its Eraring Power Station, Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant, forward by seven years to 2025. The accelerated closure of the plant signifies a major milestone in Australia’s transition to renewable energy as the closure of the plant will bring to an end one of Australia’s largest generators coal plant operations.
While coal-fired power plants still provide an average of 60% of the nation’s total energy, the early closing of Eraring demonstrates a downward trend in Australia’s reliance on fossil fuels to meet growing energy demand.
Focusing on the future, Origin is planning to install a 700MW battery to ensure grid stability and to allow consumers to utilise more green energy which would traditionally be wasted during peak hours of generation which typically coincide with the lowest demand periods.
